California Plumber license renewal

Unlike Texas (TSBPE) or states with a single plumbing board, California’s statewide credential for contracting plumbing is the CSLB C-36. Many field plumbers are employees of a C-36 contractor and do not hold a state journeyman license. Some cities still examine and card journeymen. Track the contractor license and any city cards separately.
California plumbing contractors renew a CSLB C-36 on the two-year contractor cycle. Individual journeyman cards, where a city still issues them, are a second system.

C-36 is a contractor license
The C-36 Plumbing Contractor classification is a CSLB license. Active renewal is every two years with bond and workers’ compensation requirements, not a plumbing-board CE roster. Specialty work (well drilling, fire protection, etc.) may need additional classifications.
The qualifier on the C-36 is the person whose experience and exam support the license. If that person leaves, the company cannot assume the classification survives.
City journeyman overlays
Los Angeles and certain other jurisdictions have historically required city plumber certificates for people pulling or working permits locally. Those cards do not replace the C-36 when you are contracting, and a C-36 does not automatically satisfy a city journeyman rule.
If you work across several cities, store each municipal certificate as its own row. Do not label them all “California plumber license.”
What else sits on the plumber
Backflow tester certifications, medical gas (ASSE), and weld qualifications expire on manufacturer or association calendars. They are not CSLB renewals.
OSHA 10/30 and city safety badges are owner/GC requirements. Useful, but they will not renew a C-36.

- CSLB C-36 number, qualifier, and two-year expiration
- Bond and workers’ compensation
- City journeyman or contractor registrations
- Backflow / med-gas / weld quals
- Any additional CSLB classifications on the same entity
Renewal checklist
- Put C-36 on the same CSLB calendar as your B or C-10 if you hold several
- List city plumber cards with issuing city in the name
- Do not look for a “California Plumbing Board” CE portal — it is not CSLB
- Confirm the qualifier before you bid Design-Build plumbing
- Keep CSLB pocket cards for inspections
