When does OSHA 10/30 expire?
Federally, it does not. The card in the wallet can still be worthless on Monday morning if New York City, Nevada, a public-works spec, or your GC requires a more recent course.
Last reviewed 2026-09-19. Not legal advice — confirm the jobsite spec and the official agency before you mobilize.
The federal baseline
OSHA’s Outreach Training Program issues 10-hour and 30-hour course completion cards for construction, general industry, and maritime. OSHA’s own program materials do not attach an expiration date. Retraining is not a federal Outreach requirement. That is why a calculator that prints “OSHA 10 expires in 2029” as if it were CPR is wrong.
OSHA 10/30 is also not a license. It does not replace a TDLR electrician card, a CSLB C-10, or a DOT medical certificate. Treat it as awareness training unless a contract says otherwise.
State and city overlays that do expire
New York City SST. Local Law 196 requires Site Safety Training cards on sites that need a Site Safety Plan. Worker cards are 40 hours (often OSHA 30 + 10 SST hours); supervisor cards are 62 hours. SST cards expire in five years. Refreshers are 8 hours (worker) or 16 hours (supervisor). Local Law 10 of 2026 adds a one-year post-expiry renewal window only for cards expiring on or after May 3, 2026 — expired cards still cannot be used on site. See the NYC SST vs OSHA guide and the NYC SST license page.
Nevada. NRS Chapter 618 requires construction workers to hold an OSHA-10 completion card and supervisors an OSHA-30 card (with a short onboarding window). Cards used to satisfy that statute expire five years after issuance and renew by retaking the course or completing Division-approved continuing education (5 hours for OSHA-10, 15 hours for OSHA-30).
Public works and city specs. Several states require OSHA 10 on publicly funded construction above a dollar threshold (examples historically include New York State Labor Law §220-h, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Missouri, West Virginia). Some of those statutes do not themselves require a refresher; the owner or the city still might. Philadelphia and Miami-Dade have been cited for ~5-year recency on covered work. Always read the bid spec — do not copy Nevada’s statute onto a Texas private job.
Employer and GC policies
Most “OSHA expired” arguments on jobsites are contract arguments. GCs and industrial owners commonly write “OSHA 10 within 5 years” or “OSHA 30 for competent persons within 3 years” into the EHS manual. That policy can bench a worker whose federal card is still valid. Track the spec date as a separate field if you work for more than one owner.
Unions and apprenticeship programs may require refreshers that OSHA does not. Put those on the person, not on a global OSHA template.
What to put in the roster
- Course type (10 vs 30), industry (construction vs general), and completion date
- Card number / trainer name if you have it
- A “federal expiry” of none — plus an optional “owner recency” date you calculate
- NYC SST (5-year) if the person works LL196 sites — different row
- Nevada 5-year statutory date if you work Nevada construction
Expiry calculator
Estimate typical validity for CPR, CDL medical cards, forklift, state licenses, and other US trade certs. OSHA 10/30 will show no fixed federal expiry — that is intentional.
Estimated expiry: Sep 19, 2028
Typical validity: 2 year(s). Confirm with issuer/board.
FAQ
Does OSHA 10 expire?
Not under federal OSHA Outreach rules. The Department of Labor completion card does not print an expiration date. Cities, states, owners, and employers often require a card issued within the last 3–5 years.
Does OSHA 30 expire?
Same federal rule as OSHA 10: the Outreach card does not expire. Supervisor specs and NYC SST still treat older OSHA 30 cards as stale for credit toward a new SST card (5-year lookback).
What is the difference between OSHA 30 and an NYC SST card?
OSHA 30 is a federal Outreach course. SST is a New York City DOB card required by Local Law 196 on specified sites. SST expires every 5 years. OSHA 30 can count toward a new SST card only if it is within DOB’s lookback.
Does Nevada treat OSHA cards as expired?
Nevada construction law requires OSHA-10 for workers and OSHA-30 for supervisors and treats completion cards used for that mandate as expiring 5 years after issuance, with a retake or approved continuing education to renew.
