Who licenses electricians in Texas

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) administers electrician licensing under Occupations Code Chapter 1305. There is no separate statewide “Texas Electrical Licensing Board” with its own portal. Municipalities still pull permits and can require registration, but the state credential lives at TDLR.

Companies that contract electrical work also need an Electrical Contractor license. The qualifying master electrician and the contractor license can expire on different dates. Track both.

Renewal cycle

TDLR individual electrician licenses are valid for one year from the date of issuance and must be renewed annually. TDLR typically emails or mails a reminder about 60 days before expiration. That reminder is courtesy only — a bounced email does not extend the license.

You renew online through TDLR. Work performed on an expired license is unlicensed work. Late renewal is sometimes available with extra fees, but you should not plan around the late window.

Continuing education

Most individual classes — including master, journeyman, residential wireman, maintenance, lineman, sign, and apprentice — must complete 4 hours of TDLR-approved continuing education each term. Courses must cover the National Electrical Code as adopted in Texas, safety (NFPA 70E), and state law and rules that regulate license holders.

Hours must be completed during the current license term for a timely renewal. Providers report hours to TDLR; keep the completion certificate for at least one year. If you hold more than one electrician license class, TDLR generally requires only four total hours, not four per card. Apprentices may substitute enrollment in a TDLR-registered apprenticeship program.

What expires besides the plastic card

Electrical contractor licenses, municipal registrations, workers’ comp and liability certificates, and any city-required master-of-record affidavits often sit on different calendars. A current journeyman card does not save a job if the contractor license or insurance lapsed.

Helpers still need apprentice registration. A helper working without a current apprentice card is a common inspection finding.

What to track

• TDLR license number, class (apprentice / journeyman / master / specialty), and expiration date
• Electrical contractor license number and qualifying master affiliation
• CE completion dates and TDLR provider reporting status (4 hours per term)
• Municipal or utility registrations tied to the state license
• Insurance and bond dates required to keep the contractor license active

Renewal checklist

1. Export every electrician and helper with TDLR class and expiry
2. Confirm CE is posted in TDLR’s lookup before you pay the renewal
3. Renew the individual card and the contractor license as separate tasks
4. Set 90 / 60 / 30 / 7 day reminders — TDLR’s 60-day postcard is not a system
5. Store completion certificates and renewal receipts where a superintendent can pull them

Common mistakes

• Assuming a 2- or 3-year cycle because that is true in other states
• Taking CE from a provider that is not TDLR-registered
• Renewing the journeyman and forgetting the contractor license
• Letting an apprentice card lapse while the person is still on a jobsite
