There is no statewide electrician license

New York State does not run a single journeyman or master electrician program for all 62 counties. The Department of Labor and the Department of State handle other credentials; they are not a statewide electrical license bureau. You must track the Authority Having Jurisdiction for each job.

New York City licenses Master Electricians and Special Electricians. There is no NYC journeyman license. Field electricians work under the master’s license and still need Site Safety Training (SST) cards on many jobs — that is a separate DOB safety credential, not an electrician license.

NYC DOB renewal

Master and Special Electricians renew in DOB NOW: Licensing with an NYC.ID. DOB’s licensing FAQ: renewal applications are due 30 to 90 days before expiration. Electricians have a short late window — 90 days after expiration — unlike some other DOB license types that allow up to a year.

Since 2016, Master and Special Electrician renewals require a Department-approved course of at least eight hours. Submit the original certificate. Corporate masters must keep the same NYS-registered business active; a dissolved corporation blocks renewal. A physician-completed LIC62 physical exam (within 90 days) is part of the packet for several DOB trades — follow the current electrician checklist in DOB NOW.

Outside the five boroughs

Westchester, Nassau, Suffolk, Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, and many towns run their own exams, reciprocity rules, and renewal calendars. Some recognize IBEW or other-city cards; many do not. If your crew crosses county lines, you need a row per jurisdiction, not one “NY electrician” date.

NYC Electrical Code (NYCEC) is NEC with heavy local amendments. An upstate license study plan will not pass a DOB exam and will not keep a DOB card current.

What to track

• Which AHJ issued the license (NYC DOB vs county/city board)
• NYC Master/Special number, business entity, seal, and expiration
• 8-hour DOB-approved course certificate
• SST worker or supervisor card (5-year) if the person is on SST sites
• Upstate municipal licenses as separate records

Renewal checklist

1. Never store one “New York electrician expiry” for a multi-city crew
2. Open DOB NOW 90 days out; do not wait for a paper reminder
3. Book the 8-hour approved course before the 30-day mark
4. Confirm the corporation is active with NYS Department of State
5. Track SST separately — an expired SST card benches the helper even when the master is current
