US license renewal guides

Arizona
- General Contractor — Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC)
2-year license term, staggered by license (not a single statewide expiration day).
California
- Electrician — CSLB (C-10 contractor) and DIR / DLSE Electrician Certification Unit (individual)
DIR individual certification: 3 years. CSLB C-10 contractor license: 2 years (active).
- Plumber — CSLB C-36 (contractor) plus local journeyman programs where a city requires them
CSLB C-36: 2 years active / 4 years inactive. City journeyman cards (LA, some Bay Area cities): follow the local board.
- General Contractor — California Contractors State License Board (CSLB)
Active licenses: 2 years. Inactive licenses: 4 years.
- CDL Driver — California DMV (license) and FMCSA National Registry (medical exam)
CDL: expires on the fifth birthday after issuance/renewal. Medical examiner’s certificate: up to 24 months (often shorter).
Florida
- Electrician — Florida Electrical Contractors’ Licensing Board (ECLB) via DBPR
August 31 of every even-numbered year (certified and registered electrical licenses on this calendar).
- General Contractor — Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) via DBPR
Certified licenses expire August 31 of even-numbered years. Registered licenses expire August 31 of odd-numbered years.
- CDL Driver — Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and FMCSA
Florida CDL follows the DL expiration on the card (commonly 8 years for eligible US citizens). Medical examiner’s certificate: up to 24 months.
New York
- Electrician — No statewide electrician license — NYC Department of Buildings (and other local AHJs)
NYC Master/Special Electrician: renew in the 90–30 day window before expiration (late electrician renewal only 90 days after). Other NY cities set their own terms.
- CDL Driver — New York DMV and FMCSA National Registry
NY CDL follows DMV license term (commonly 8 years for a standard NY driver license cycle, confirm the card). Medical certificate: up to 24 months.
- NYC SST (Site Safety Training) — NYC Department of Buildings — Site Safety Training (Local Law 196)
SST cards are valid 5 years. Worker refresh: 8 hours. Supervisor refresh: 16 hours.
Texas
- Electrician — Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR)
1 year from issuance (annual renewal)
- Plumber — Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE)
Annual renewal. First expiration is assigned (often 6–18 months after exam), then yearly.
- HVAC Technician — Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation — Air Conditioning and Refrigeration
ACR contractor licenses renew annually. Technician registration/certification also annual.
- General Contractor — No statewide GC license — city building departments plus TDLR/TSBPE for trades
No state GC expiration. City contractor registrations vary (often 1–2 years). Trade licenses follow TDLR or TSBPE.
- CDL Driver — Texas Department of Public Safety — Driver License Division
CDL: multi-year TxDPS card. Medical examiner’s certificate: up to 24 months. Texas downgrades the CDL on the 60th day after a required medical expires.
Washington
- Electrician — Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) — Electrical
Electrician / administrator / master certificates: 3 years. Electrical trainee certificates: 2 years.
