Texas CDL Driver license renewal

Texas DPS, not a city “CDL board,” issues commercial licenses. The operational failure mode is medical certification: if your self-certification requires a certificate and DPS does not have a valid one, the department downgrades the CDL to a non-CDL on day 60. Dispatch that only watches license birthday will put an illegal driver on a load.
Texas CDL holders who must carry a medical certificate are downgraded on the 60th day after that certificate expires. The plastic CDL can still look fine while commercial privileges are already gone.

Self-certification plus medical
CDL holders self-certify to an interstate/intrastate and excepted/non-excepted category (37 Tex. Admin. Code §16.23). Non-excepted interstate and certain other categories must keep a valid medical examiner’s certificate on file with DPS.
FMCSA caps a routine certificate at 24 months. Examiners issue shorter cards. Since June 23, 2025, examiners submit results through FMCSA’s National Registry II; Texas no longer wants drivers to be the primary paper courier, but you should still verify the DPS record updated.
The 60-day downgrade
If a required medical certificate expires and a valid replacement is not on file, Texas must downgrade the CDL on the 60th day after expiration. DPS sends a courtesy notice about 60 days before the certificate expires. Courtesy is not a legal stay.
A downgrade can force knowledge and skills tests to get commercial privileges back unless you meet DPS’s upgrade-without-retest conditions (eligible record, DL not expired more than two years, downgrade within the last 12 months, valid medical now in NRII). That is a expensive way to learn your tracker was wrong.
CDL plastic vs medical
Renew the CDL at a driver license office or eligible online path when the license itself expires. That date is independent of the medical date. Hazmat (TSA), tanker, doubles, and passenger endorsements add more dates.
Intrastate-only and excepted categories have different medical posting rules. Do not copy one driver’s federal interstate file onto a farm-excepted driver without reading the self-certification.

Renewal checklist
- Two columns: CDL expiry and medical expiry — never one
- Schedule physicals 60+ days before medical expiry so NRII can post
- Confirm Texas License Eligibility / record shows the new certificate
- If downgraded, read DPS upgrade rules before you pay for retesting
- Keep the certificate copy in the DQ file even when NRII is electronic

Does Texas take the CDL immediately when the medical expires?
DPS downgrades on the 60th day after a required medical certificate expires if a valid certificate is not on file. You should still treat the medical expiry as the stop-work date for dispatch.
How long is a DOT medical card good for?
Up to 24 months. The examiner can issue less. Verify what is printed on that driver’s certificate.
