California CDL Driver license renewal

California fleets lose drivers when the medical card lapses, not when the CDL birthday arrives. DMV will not treat a current Class A card as enough if the medical examiner’s certificate is expired or never posted to the driving record.
A California CDL is usually a 5-year plastic card. The credential that actually parks trucks is the DOT medical certificate — up to 2 years, often less — which must be on file with DMV.

How long a California CDL lasts
Under California Vehicle Code §15255.1, a commercial driver’s license is generally issued to expire on the fifth birthday of the applicant following the application. Limited-term legal-presence CDLs can expire earlier, tied to the underlying document. A commercial learner’s permit is much shorter — typically up to 180 days.
Renew the plastic CDL at DMV. That is a different transaction from updating a medical certificate.
Medical certificate: the 24-month clock
FMCSA allows a DOT medical examiner’s certificate for a maximum of 24 months. Examiners issue shorter certificates to monitor blood pressure, sleep apnea, diabetes, or other conditions. Some drivers are on a 3-, 6-, or 12-month card and do not realize dispatch is still looking at the CDL expiry.
California requires the Medical Examination Report (MCSA-5875) and Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MCSA-5876) to be on file with DMV. A card in the driver’s wallet is not sufficient if DMV’s record is stale. Interstate exam results are moving to electronic National Registry submission; confirm the current DMV intake path when you book the physical.
What happens if the medical lapses
Without a valid medical certificate on file, the driver is not qualified to operate a CMV that requires a CDL. That is a federal and California enforcement issue, not a paperwork nicety. Carriers also fail audits when driver qualification files show a gap.
Hazmat (TSA), passenger, school bus, and TWIC dates are additional clocks. Track them separately from both the CDL and the medical card.

- CDL class, endorsements, restrictions, and fifth-birthday expiration
- Medical examiner’s certificate issue date, expiration, and examiner registry number
- Date DMV posted the MER/MEC to the driving record
- Shorter medical terms (3/6/12 months) flagged as high risk
- Hazmat, passenger, and TWIC expirations
Renewal checklist
- List every driver with CDL expiry and medical expiry as two columns
- Book the DOT physical 45–60 days before the medical card ends
- Confirm DMV shows the new certificate before the old one dies
- Remind dispatch — a driver with an expired medical is not a legal backup
- Keep the long-form exam and certificate in the DQ file
