Two agencies, two credentials

The Contractors State License Board issues the C-10 Electrical Contractor license to a business with a qualifying individual. That license lets the company contract electrical work. Active C-10 licenses renew every two years. CSLB does not require continuing education for C-10 renewal; it does require a current contractor bond, workers’ compensation compliance, and a complete renewal.

The Department of Industrial Relations, through the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement Electrician Certification Unit, certifies individual electricians (general, residential, fire/life safety, and other categories). Certification expires three years from the effective date. DIR may not send a reminder — the date on the card is the date that matters.

DIR renewal rules

To renew on time you need 32 hours of DIR-approved continuing education in the certification category and 2,000 hours of work in the industry during the preceding three years, plus the $100 fee. You can file up to one year before expiration once CE is done.

If the card is already expired, DIR’s published path is a $200 renewal that requires retaking the exam rather than submitting the 32-hour CE packet. That is a different process from a timely renewal — do not treat “expired” as a late fee on the same form.

C-10 contractor renewal

CSLB mails a renewal about 60 days out. Incomplete applications come back and can create unlicensed time. C-10 timely active renewal fees are higher than a standard B license ($470 sole owner / $720 entity as published on CSLB’s fee schedule). Workers’ comp recertification is part of staying active.

The qualifier named on the C-10 must remain affiliated. If your qualifying electrician leaves, the contractor license is at risk even if every journeyman’s DIR card is current.

What to track

• DIR certification number, category, effective date, and 3-year expiration
• 32-hour CE certificates from DIR-listed providers and 2,000-hour work evidence
• CSLB C-10 license number, qualifier name, and 2-year expiration
• Contractor bond and workers’ compensation dates
• Any city business tax or utility competency cards layered on top

Renewal checklist

1. Split the roster into DIR individuals vs the C-10 company license
2. Start DIR CE at least 90 days before the 3-year date — 32 hours is not a weekend
3. Calendar the C-10 separately (even years for some shops, rolling for others)
4. Confirm the qualifier is still employed before you bid public work
5. Keep DIR and CSLB receipts in the same audit folder as OSHA and city cards

Common mistakes

• Renewing C-10 and assuming journeymen are covered
• Waiting for a DIR reminder letter that may never arrive
• Using CE that is not on DIR’s approved-provider list
• Letting the qualifier quit without a replacement application in motion
