Texas General Contractor license renewal

National “state contractor license” templates fail in Texas. There is no TDLR general contractor classification and no statewide GC exam. The Texas Residential Construction Commission is gone. A GC still loses jobs when Dallas registration, Austin permit credentials, or a sub’s electrician card lapses.
Texas does not issue a statewide general contractor license. What expires are city registrations and the trade licenses (TDLR / TSBPE) your subs must hold.

What the state does and does not license
TDLR licenses specific trades — electricians and air-conditioning/refrigeration contractors among them — not the general contractor role. TSBPE licenses plumbers. If your page or spreadsheet says “Texas Contractor Licensing Board,” that agency does not exist for GCs.
You can operate as a general contractor in Texas without a state GC license. You cannot perform or subcontract electrical, plumbing, or ACR work unless the people doing that work hold the right state credential.
City registration is the real calendar
Dallas, San Antonio, Fort Worth, Austin, and other cities run contractor registration or permit-portal accounts. Rules differ: some require standing registration and insurance before any permit; some only when you activate a job; Houston is lighter at the GC level and stricter on the trades. Registration in one city does not transfer.
Track each city as its own credential: registration number, insurance minimums, workers’ comp, and expiration. Pair that with the TDLR/TSBPE dates for every electrician, plumber, and HVAC tech on the bid.
What to put in a Texas GC tracker
Do not invent a fake statewide expiration. Put “N/A — no state GC license” on the company row and attach city rows plus trade-license rows. That is more honest than a templated “typically 1–3 years.”
Public owners and GCs still ask for safety cards (OSHA 10/30), insurance, and sometimes city-specific safety orientations. Those are contract requirements, not a TDLR GC license.

- City contractor registrations and permit-portal accounts (one row per city)
- TDLR electrician and ACR licenses for self-perform or house techs
- TSBPE plumbing licenses
- Insurance, bond, and workers’ comp dates required by each city
- OSHA / owner safety-card requirements on public jobs

- List every city you pull permits in and the registration expiry
- Audit subs’ TDLR/TSBPE cards before mobilization
- Calendar insurance to the strictest city minimum
